Implant Restorations: Case 6

This is perhaps the most basic application for implants yet it has by far and away the most profound life quality impact. This patient was a long-term (several decades) denture wearer with absolutely no residual ridge left on her lower jaw. She had managed to function somehow over the years but with great difficulty. Some people I have seen during my career have chosen not to wear their lower denture, preferring to “gum” their food rather than struggle with a lower denture that simply floats around. This patient’s ridge was so far gone that without major reconstructive surgery the only good option was to place two implants in the front of her jaw to secure her denture. Ideally they would have been placed farther apart but anatomic limitations prevented this. When I saw her for her first follow-up after the implants were put into function she stated that she was able to eat raw carrots and other foods she hadn’t eaten in years. This type of treatment is relatively inexpensive. It is very gratifying to be able to do this kind of treatment for our patients and they are some of the most appreciative patients any dentist will have.
